Starring Charlie Sheen – the Movies that Made His Career (or not…)

Posted by on May 3, 2011 in Comedy, Drama, DVD | 12 comments

Oh how far he has fallen…the award winning movies started his career, and then he made Two And  A Half Men a hit – now he’s only known for his outrageous behavior.

He became a box office superstar in the 1980s and 1990s often starring in numerous movies a year.  Six of the films he starred in either won awards or were at the very least made a lot of money and were highly acclaimed.

Red Dawn– was his first billed movie of the 80s, where he played the role of Matt, the younger brother of Jed, played by Patrick Swayze.  Its World War III, and they are part of a group of teens that defend their town against the Soviets.  Interestingly enough, there is a re-make scheduled to release for this and Josh Peck (from Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh) will be playing the role of Matt.  Instead  of Soviets they’ll be saving their town from the North Koreans.

Platoon – This 1986 movie won 4 oscars.

Wall Street – (1997) finds Sheen starring alongside his father Martin Sheen.    Oliver Stone cast Charlie in a lead role of Bud Fox.  This was another Oscar winning movie.

Young Guns in 1998 this time has Sheen cast with his brother Emilio Estevez.  They made up 2 of the 6 reasons ‘why the west was wild’.  With other heart throbs of the late 80s like Kiefer Sutherland and Lou Diamond Phillips it’s no wonder this movie won a Bronze Wrangler award.

Major League came out the very next year in 1989, where he plays Ricky Vaughn, as part of the ‘less than desirable’ ball players that make of up the Cleveland Indians, until the team shapes up.

Men At Work (1990) is another movie he starred in with his brother Emilio Estevez, about two young unambitious garbage men.

The Rookie (not to be confused with the baseball movie “The Rookie”) was another 1990 movie.  Sheen stars in this one with Clint Eastwood, where Eastwood gets “stuck” with Sheen as a partner.

One of the funnier movies Sheen starred in was Hot Shots! In 1991.  A spoof of the popular Top Gun movie.  This was followed up with Hot Shots! Part Deux in 1993.

My favorite of the lot though was his role as Aramis in the Three Musketeers.  Somehow this is how I would like to remember the “old” Charlie Sheen.  All for one, and one for all <– that kind of thing, not so much this All for Me and Me for All attitude of late.

What was your favorite Charlie Sheen movie of the 1980s – 90s?

Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure Blu-ray DVD

Posted by on Apr 20, 2011 in Blu-ray, Comedy, Disney, DVD | 114 comments

Yesterday Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released SHARPAY’S FABULOUS ADVENTURE on Blu-ray & DVD. This character spin-off movie from the High School Musical franchise, will likely be as much as hit as HSM was.

The synopsis is that after a talent scout spots Sharpay performing with her dog Boi at a charity gala, they set off for the bright lights of New York City, where Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) is convinced that fame and fortune are in the bag. But theatre’s a dog-eat-dog world, as she and Boi discover when they encounter the devious owner of a pampered pooch named Countess and a scheming Broadway starlet who will do anything to crush the competition. Sharpay also meets Peyton (Austin Butler), a handsome student filmmaker who finds Sharpay nearly as fascinating as she finds herself.

This has been a much anticipated release, especially for those that have been on “Team Sharpay” over “Team Gabriella”.

The DVD was instantly put in the player when it arrived for review. It was watched by both grown ups and kids a like. It’s evident that Sharpay is just as fun to watch on her own without the HSM cast in the wings and her relentless pursuit of making it big has not been dampened a bit!

You don’t want to miss the DVD Bonus Features which include hilarious Bloopers and Austin Cam (special footage shot on-set by ‘Peyton’) on the regular disc, plus The Evolution Of Sharpay on the Blu-ray DVD – which is a fun look back from where Sharpay began in HSM.

And if you don’t want to be caught on ‘What Not To Wear’ – Sharpay’s got some tips on how you can “Glam It Up” that you can download below. (It’s a pretty big file, so be patient while it loads ;) )

Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure is available as a 3-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack Superset (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) which includes a limited edition pink clutch purse, a 2-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray + DVD), and a 1-Disc DVD.  If you want to score a great deal on this for the Easter baskets – Disney Movie Rewards currently has a $8 off coupon for the Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure Combo Pack!

5 Julia Roberts Romantic Movies

Posted by on Apr 9, 2011 in Comedy, DVD | 5 comments

Julia Roberts was at one time arguably one of Hollywood’s most sought after and highest paid actresses.  She was a great choice for a romantic comedy or romance themed movies.  Let’s check out 5 of them:

1. Pretty Woman (1990) – This film was actually a budget film for the studio, costing only $14 million but it grossed $463 million!  A “rags to riches” story which always has the girls teary eyed.  Julia plays Vivian Ward, a prostitute who earns the affection of Edward Lewis, a successful businessman (Richard Gere).  Their relationship actually stars with Vivian’s offer to help Edward find his way through Hollywood.  Julia Roberts received a Golden Globe Award for her role in this movie.

2. My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) – Basically a romantic comedy, which was another success in terms of gross revenue at almost $300 million from a $46 million budget.  Here is a love story that knocks down barriers.  Julianne Potter made a pact with her college sweetheart Michael (Dermot Mulroney) that if they turn 28 and aren’t married, they will seek each other out and get married.  When that time comes around, Michael is about to get married, and Julianne feels she can’t let that happen so she sets up a plan to sabotage the wedding.

3. Runaway Bride (1999) – Another Roberts-Gere team up, and another romantic comedy.  Maggie Carpenter develops the fascination of having her groom wait at the altar, when she suddenly changes her mind at the last minute, but can she be caught with the fourth wedding coming up?  Success for the studio once again a $70 million budget grossed over $300 million.

4. Notting Hill (1999) – In this movie Roberts plays Anna Scott, a famous Hollywood actress who has fallen for a bookshop owner William Thacker (Hugh Grant) at Notting Hill.  1999 was a good year for Roberts – between Runaway Bride and Notting Hill, as Notting Hill made over $363 million!

5. America’s Sweethearts (2001) – This movie out of the five, didn’t have much financial success to it.  It features John Cusack and Catherine Zeta-Jones who are dubbed ‘America’s Sweetheats’, a successful loving partnership in the movie industry with whom the media has their eyes on.  They split up owing to Gwen’s affair (Zeta-Jones’ character), but show a ‘good front’ to sell themselves as a couple because of the premiere of the last film they’ve done.  The twist of the story happens as Cusack’s character falls for Gwen’s assistant who also happens to be her sister (played by Roberts), which then becomes the story of the movie.
