Paul Rudd is a favorite actor of mine. Somehow he always makes his characters believable, and it’s no different in Our Idiot Brother where he plays Ned, a carefree honest guy who spirals into the lives of his three sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer).
As Miranda, Natalie and Liz each take turns at housing Ned, their brother’s unfailing commitment to honesty creates more than a few messes in their comfortable routines. But after seeing life through Ned’s optimistic perspective, his family comes to realize that maybe Ned isn’t such an idiot after all.
One of the things I liked about the movie is that Ned’s family is relatable – if you can show me a family that doesn’t have dysfunction I have some swampland in Florida that I can sell you. I mean maybe not to the extreme of “Our Idiot Brother”, but none the less you’ll find similarities of the characters and scenes in your family at least once or twice in it.
The movie has a lot of stories interwoven – it isn’t just about Ned, the ‘idiot’ brother, but each one of his sisters has her own story going on as well.
I had seen the commercials for this title on TV when it was released in theaters, and was a bit surprised that it had a couple of scenes that I was ‘uncomfortable’ with in it, as the commercials didn’t portray that side of the movie at all. I am quite conservative though so take that along with my opinion.
“Our Idiot Brother” is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. The OUR IDIOT BROTHER Blu-ray™ and DVD bonus features include an audio commentary with director Jesse Peretz; a “The Making of Our Idiot Brother” featurette; and deleted and extended scenes.
