Terry Pratchett’s Going Postal Blu-ray DVD

Fantasy book lovers scoop up Terry Pratchett’s writing.  He tells a good story as evidenced by the 39 books in the Discworld series, and that the only author that trump’s him in the UK is Harry Potter’s creator J.K. Rowling.  Going Postal is the 33^rd of those books, and was made into a UK TV movie event in 2010.  Now it is available on Blu-ray (arv $39.99) and DVD from Acorn Media.

The star of the Going Postal is Moist von Lipwig (played by Richard Coyle) a con artist that has run out of time.  Rescued from a hanging by Lord Vetinari (played by Charles Dance who also notably plays the character of Tywin Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones) – von Lipwig can choose to run the post office or …cease to exist.  Naturally von Lipwig chooses to run the post office, planning yet another con to escape.

The title of this story is more than perfect, Going Postal is well exactly that!  The post office seems to come with a conscience, Moist von Lipwig’s conscience at that, and through trying to con the town of Ankh-Morpork while running the postal service, von Lipwig actually ends up seeing the errors of his ways.

Filled with colorful characters, including the grieving Adora Dearheart (Claire Foy), the trusty sidekick postal workers, Pump #19 a Golem that ‘cannot’ be manipulated to keep an eye on Moist, and of course the antagonist of everyone Reacher Gilt (David Suchet).

The setting of Ankh-Morpork is visually stimulating, the costumes, buildings and the Clacks (Discworld’s ‘e-mail’ so to speak) – give off a fantastical appeal that is steeped in historical tradition.

This adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s book by the same name, won my family over instantly.  The story is fun and exciting and will appeal to many ages.  If you’ve never entered Discworld before, Going Postal is a great introduction to it.
