5 Julia Roberts Romantic Movies

Julia Roberts was at one time arguably one of Hollywood’s most sought after and highest paid actresses.  She was a great choice for a romantic comedy or romance themed movies.  Let’s check out 5 of them:

1. Pretty Woman (1990) – This film was actually a budget film for the studio, costing only $14 million but it grossed $463 million!  A “rags to riches” story which always has the girls teary eyed.  Julia plays Vivian Ward, a prostitute who earns the affection of Edward Lewis, a successful businessman (Richard Gere).  Their relationship actually stars with Vivian’s offer to help Edward find his way through Hollywood.  Julia Roberts received a Golden Globe Award for her role in this movie.

2. My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) – Basically a romantic comedy, which was another success in terms of gross revenue at almost $300 million from a $46 million budget.  Here is a love story that knocks down barriers.  Julianne Potter made a pact with her college sweetheart Michael (Dermot Mulroney) that if they turn 28 and aren’t married, they will seek each other out and get married.  When that time comes around, Michael is about to get married, and Julianne feels she can’t let that happen so she sets up a plan to sabotage the wedding.

3. Runaway Bride (1999) – Another Roberts-Gere team up, and another romantic comedy.  Maggie Carpenter develops the fascination of having her groom wait at the altar, when she suddenly changes her mind at the last minute, but can she be caught with the fourth wedding coming up?  Success for the studio once again a $70 million budget grossed over $300 million.

4. Notting Hill (1999) – In this movie Roberts plays Anna Scott, a famous Hollywood actress who has fallen for a bookshop owner William Thacker (Hugh Grant) at Notting Hill.  1999 was a good year for Roberts – between Runaway Bride and Notting Hill, as Notting Hill made over $363 million!

5. America’s Sweethearts (2001) – This movie out of the five, didn’t have much financial success to it.  It features John Cusack and Catherine Zeta-Jones who are dubbed ‘America’s Sweetheats’, a successful loving partnership in the movie industry with whom the media has their eyes on.  They split up owing to Gwen’s affair (Zeta-Jones’ character), but show a ‘good front’ to sell themselves as a couple because of the premiere of the last film they’ve done.  The twist of the story happens as Cusack’s character falls for Gwen’s assistant who also happens to be her sister (played by Roberts), which then becomes the story of the movie.

I had a girlfriend many years ago who had bipolar disorder, or manic depression as we called it back then. I’m reading that Catherine Zeta-Jones has developed the condition after being subject to profound stress to do with the cancer of her husband Michael Douglas. That this is possible, developing the condition, is certainly news to me as in my day we were only told (so far as I’m aware) that it was a genetic condition, you had it or you didn’t have it. It sounds like more is understood about bipolar disorder these days, so that at least is encouraging news. I liked her much better than Julia Roberts in America’s Sweethearts.
