Some people view GPS navigation as a commodity….I view it as a necessity.  Yes, I’m one of those people who gets lost trying to find a drop off location, and my map reading skills have something to be desired.  So reviewing a Magellan RoadMate 3065 was a dream for me and an assurance for my Hubby Smile.

This is what a Magellan RoadMate 3065 looks like.

These are a few details from their website.

The Magellan RoadMate 3065 is a premium 4.7″ navigator packed with features perfect for commuters, starting with Traffic Wakeup, Bluetooth, OneTouch™ favorites menu, free lifetime traffic alerts, highway lane assist and built-in AAA TourBook®, plus much more.

We haven’t been on a ‘major’ road trip since we got this unit to review, however, we have used it for some short jaunts out of town.  We found the Magellan RoadMate 3065 a great size.  Not hugely obtrusive on the dashboard when using the plug-in, and it tucks neatly into the glove box when you don’t need it.

Initially I was impressed because the graphics are really great.  Although the first time we used it I was the passenger, so I could just sit and watch it.  That’s not a recommended task while you’re also driving (Smile), so you’ll be glad to note that the voice over for directions and the ‘chimes’ to get ready to turn where needed are adequate for navigating should you be alone in the vehicle.

The Highway Lane Assist feature shows you what lane you need to use before you approach the exit.  That’s a great feature if you’re in a large city that you’re unfamiliar with.

No need to panic if you’re car breaks down in the middle of nowhere either.  If you’re a AAA member (which we are!), should you need their assistance, the phone number is accessible through the GPS, as well as your exact coordinates.  VERY helpful if you’re on the side of the interstate in the middle of say… North Dakota…with no landmark features to identify except for miles of blowing prairie crops!

You can save locations into the device in the address book, so if your starting point is always home, you don’t have to type it in each time, you use it.  Even better the OneTouch favorites menu offers instant access to your personalized bookmarks of favorite places and searches for anywhere you travel.  With a single touch you can find your favorite coffee shop or restaurant no matter what city you’re in.

What makes this GPS stand out though is the Free Lifetime real-time traffic information.  Designed for commuters it lets you avoid traffic jams, detours and construction zones with no subscription fees ever!  That’s something Google Maps just can’t do for you!

The Magellan RoadMate 3065 also provides you with detailed reporting to track your mileage for expense reports and tax purposes, the ability to plan your trip with multiple stops in the order you want or to plot the most efficient route if you are trying to save time and/or money.

The Magellan RoadMate 3065 package contents comes with the GPS receiver, pre-loaded maps of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, a windshield mount, vehicle power adapter, mini USB cable and a user handbook.  You need an IBM compatible PC, internet connection, USB port and Microsoft Windows Vista or Windows 7 for system upgrades.  The retail purchase price on the Magellan RoadMate 3065 is $219.99.
