I only learned about the true story behind The Way Home
, as I was watching the movie.
Dean Cain (“Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”) stars as Randy Simpkins, a husband and father torn between the demands of his job and commitment to his family. Asked by his wife Christal to watch their two-year-old son Joe for a few minutes, Randy is distracted by work and Joe disappears. Racked by guilt, Randy joins Christal in a desperate search for their missing son alongside hundreds of others from their church and community. Randy and Christal’s strained marriage must now weather the ultimate test—the potential loss of a child. THE WAY HOME is the story of Randy’s powerful spiritual journey back to love, faith and a Godly understanding of what must always take first priority in a man’s life—his family.
Seeing as Joe’s real father, Randy Simpkins, was the executive producer on the movie I would like to think that the events portrayed were as true as they could be when filming.
With that assumption, I was moved (yes, to tears) with the way the community rallied around this family. The way the media came to help, not hurt.
The police, sheriff and fire units had never seen the kind of volunteer support from neighbors, family and friends that the Simpkins received.
Residents from other areas began to come to help where they could. And while the emergency services and law enforcement were mobilized to prepare for a worst case scenario, the community kept hope and just kept looking for little Joe.
While this is a very serious movie, it’s pretty good to see.
I believe there will be a marked difference in the way you react toward your children after watching it. At least from where I am standing.
It will definitely shake you up, whether it’s due to an evaluation of where your priorities have been the past weeks or months, or to be more patient with your family, or a combination. But, either way, it will change your outlook, and for some of us, we need a good reminder like that.
